If success is the best revenge, then it looks like director Kathryn Bigelow is really raking it in.James Cameron's ex-wife (who was married to the famed director before he reportedly left her for "Terminator" actress Linda Hamilton) one-upped her old hubby last night in the awards race when she won BAFTA’s Best Director Award for "The Hurt Locker" – which also took home best picture.
The former spouses have gone head-to-head this season for their films, the culmination of which will be at the Oscars on March 7. And although Cameron may have looked like the front-runner for the Oscar this year after winning the Golden Globe for his film “Avatar,” Kathryn snagged the Directors’ Guild Award only days later, and the two have been on even playing field ever since.
Until now, anyway.
“Kathryn was definitely the underdog before,” says an insider. “But now it’s feasible that she could win the Oscar, too.”
We’ll say. “The Hurt Locker” beat “Avatar” in every BAFTA category they were both nominated for with the exception of two.
And with all eyes on her and her film, Bigelow has taken the high road when it comes to dealing with her ex in the spotlight: Not only has the female director been more than willing to take photos alongside Cameron on the red carpet, she even has had nothing but wonderful things to say about him to the press, too.
And Cameron certainly held up his end last night: the “Titanic” legend graciously applauded for Bigelow after every one of her accolades.
In fact, he was part of the standing ovation when she accepted her Best Director nod.
“A resolution for peace!” she exclaimed in her speech, referencing the war in Iraq. And although we are not quite there yet, it seems as if she and Cameron have certainly found a detente.
